About Installmap

Installmap is a research site that publishes which software each named list of companies runs. 6 lists are crawled as sets: the Inc 5000, Y Combinator companies, the Fortune 500, unicorns, SaaS companies and the Tranco top 10,000, 21,489 companies in all, crawled on 4 September 2026. A wider sample of 8,291 company websites is published alongside.

What Installmap does

Group pages

One page per list, at /groups. Each shows the share of the list's companies running each detected tool, with the denominator and the crawl date.

Tool and category pages

/tools and /categories give the count and share for each tool and each software category, with cuts by industry, company size and country where the base is large enough.

Research

Reports and statistics roundups at /research. Research posts ship with a CSV of the rows behind them.

Badges

An SVG badge for the most detected tool in each category in each group, at /badges.

What makes Installmap different

Counts are free to read and cite

No plan is needed to read or cite a count. BuiltWith lists its plans at $295, $495 and $995 a month, and Wappalyzer's paid plans start at $250 a month (comparison pages, free BuiltWith alternatives on Medium).

Denominators and crawl dates are published

Every share states how many companies were crawled and when. The BuiltWith plans page states totals of tracked technologies and domains but publishes no sample or failure counts.

Named lists, crawled as sets

Counts are reported per list (the Fortune 500, Y Combinator companies and so on), so a share answers "what fraction of this list runs X".

How Installmap works

Each company homepage is loaded in a headless browser and matched against known fingerprints for analytics, CRM and marketing automation, advertising, chat, e-commerce, consent and hosting tools. The funnel from list to crawled site, the failures and the detection signals are on the method page. Changes to the data are logged at /data-updates. Corrections and questions go to hello@installmap.com.

Frequently asked questions

Is Installmap free?

Yes. Every count on the site is free to read and free to cite with a link to the page it came from. See pricing.

Can I embed a count on my own site?

Yes. The category leader badges at /badges are SVG files that link back to the group page they come from.

Where are the datasets?

Each research post links a CSV of its rows. Datasets are also published on GitHub.
